Quality child care and early education may mean different things to different people. Virginia Beach helps parents by defining quality in terms of what has been proven to provide the optimal learning environment for young children. What does that mean for you as a provider? Below are simple guidelines to help you assess your center’s environment and instructional practices, with added information on enrolling in our local quality rating and improvement system, VSQI.

The Virginia Star Quality Initiative (VSQI) was created to provide a consistent way to distinguish the level of quality in early education programs, allowing families to make more informed choices and allowing child care providers a way to improve the quality of their services. This voluntary quality rating and improvement system for early childhood settings awards programs that choose to participate one of five star levels of increasing quality. Rated providers are demonstrating their commitment to quality beyond expectation or requirement. But the rating is only the first step of the VSQI process. After receiving a rating, programs are given tools to improve their quality through mentoring and other assistance.
To get more information on how your center can enroll in VSQI, contact Sarah Gunnell, VSQI Program Coordinator at: (757) 822-5165 or email: firstname.lastname@example.org.
The answer could be in the stars! VSQI is the “consumer reports” of childcare; a tool to help parents recognize quality in early childhood settings. Centers receive star ratings on a scale from 1 to 5, and every star that a center earns is above and beyond the minimum standards for childcare in our region.
Unsure if your center is participates in VSQI? Ask! Or, go directly to the Virginia Early Childhood Foundation website where the ratings are published. Search by city or center name to find out how many stars the center earned in their most recent rating. On this site, you can also learn about the tools that are used in the rating and how many points the center earned in each of the four areas of quality: teacher education and qualifications, teacher-child interactions, program structure, and educational environment.
Building on state licensing standards, VSQI provides a method to assess, improve and communicate the level of quality in early care and education settings that families consider for their children. The rating scale defines standards for early childhood education, provides accountability measures, supports centers in improving and maintaining higher quality programs and improves the information available to parents.
